Harry S. Hertz

Dr. Hertz has responsibility for the National Quality Program which administers the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Prior to becoming Program Director in 1996, he served as the Program’s Deputy Director from 1992-1996. Dr. Hertz has been with the National Institute of Standards and Technology since 1973, originally as a research chemist, and then in a series of management positions including Director of the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory.

He has made presentations to a wide variety of audiences on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, its criteria for measuring performance excellence, and on health care quality improvement. He is the author or co-author of over 50 publications and holds 1 patent. He serves on advisory committees for the Conference Board, the United Way of America, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Dr. Hertz is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received numerous awards including the 1986 Arthur S. Flemming Award as one of ten outstanding civil servants under age 40. He has a B.S. in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and a Ph.D. from M.I.T. Following graduate school, Dr. Hertz spent two years as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Munich.
